Father Bob Maguire.
A request from a follower on Twitter, hearing about his 50th anniversary as a clergyman, plus a media beat up over gay marriage prompted me to dig up an old amateur video I shot with the South Melbourne parish priest whilst on holiday in 2007.
I attended Father Bob’s Sunday mass and hoped to be able to say a quick hello afterwards - but alas, he disappeared behind the altar after giving the final blessing.
Walking back to the tram stop I spotted him on a side street outside the church chatting to a couple of locals.
I had only intended to thank him for mass and telling him how much I enjoyed his TV and radio work with John Safran (vs God, Speaking In Tongues and Sunday Night Safran) - but ended up staying around for ages as Father Bob waxed lyrical about charity, community, the quirks of his parish and everything in between.
I can’t remember what compelled me to pull out my camera - but it all worked out for the best.
Some may say he’s controversial. But one thing’s for certain, Father Bob is compassionate and caring. Keep fighting the good fight.
