Katy Perry, autographed photo
(Apologies for the discoloured photo, it was taken with my phone.)
I took this shot working at Katy Perry’s performance at 2DayFM’s World Famous Rooftop in August 2010, then attended a meet-and-greet prior to her Sydney show in May 2011 where she signed a printed copy.

2011 Nikon-Walkley Press Photography Awards Entry: Police funeral for William Crews

I submitted my first ever entry for the Walkleys, Australian journalism’s most coveted awards, something I thought I’d never do (let alone covering a funeral).

The above photos were entered into the News Photography category, with the following supporting statement.

When you’re asked by the Content Director of a top forty FM radio station to photograph a funeral for what is, by and large, an entertainment-based website, you’d be forgiven if you gave the request a second thought.

However in this instance, it was the funeral of Detective Constable William Crews, accidentally shot by a comrade during a drug raid on 9 September, 2010. The tragedy struck a chord with the public, and the station felt that it was appropriate to reflect this event not only on-air, but visually on 2DayFM’s website.

What was clearly evident was the human interest in the event, with the general public turning out in large numbers to pay their respects.

Given the nature of the event, photographs were captured from afar in order to maintain a respectful distance for mourners to grieve without any distractions.

The selection of photographs hopes to demonstrate the above, as well as a glimpse of the bravest members of our society at their most fragile and vulnerable.

Whilst my entry wasn’t listed as a finalist, it was an amazing experience to have been part of the process.

The finalists are listed here, and if you get a chance to see their work, you’ll agree that their entries are truly exceptional, amazing and inspiring.

Lady Gaga’s Fans: Monsters

Southern Cross Austereo was a presenting partner for Lady Gaga’s “Sydney Monster Hall” concert in July 2011. I was the project lead for the execution of the event (concert and behind the scenes footage, photos, updates and social media) across the metropolitan and regional Today Network radio websites.

One content initiative was the concept of “MonStars”, placing the spotlight on Lady Gaga’s super fans (a play on “monsters”, of course) and following their journey from winning event tickets all the way to the concert itself.

Four competition winners were profiled alongside their social media presences online as well as a series of videos, including the one above, which I produced, shot and edited.

Miley Cyrus / thedirt.com.au interview.

Andrew Gunsberg and Charli Robinson spoke to Miley Cyrus at her hotel during the Sydney leg of her Gypsy Heart tour.

Miley was very warm, down to earth, and extremely, extremely talkative. The latter especially came true when she revealed what she really thought of Perez Hilton and Justin Bieber.

The Script and Tinie Tempah, Sydney, April 2011.

I was pleasantly surprised with the way things turned out here.

Admittedly The Script’s sound isn’t my cup of tea however my perceptions changed watching them live. Lead by Danny O’Donoghue, the band were absolutely bursting with energy, taking the sell out crowd along with them for the ride.

To cap things off, O’Donoghue jumped into the photo pit towards the back half of the third song (we were given three songs to shoot) and reached out to the crowd over the barriers. What a sight!

Needless to say fellow snappers were simply beside themselves.

Russell Crowe. MTV Hits Weekly Hot30 Countdown.

This was my first ever video to appear on MTV, covering the Australian premiere of The Next Three Days.

I shot the red carpet event for the Today Network’s Hot30 Countdown and The Dirt. The footage was then featured on the MTV Hits Weekly Hot30 Countdown program, a joint production between Austereo and MTV Networks.
